The long history of Generations Hall, home of the Metropolitan nightclub, spans more than 180 years. Originally built in the 1820's, for over sixty years it was occupied by Thompson's Sugar Refinery. Around 1880, a young and prosperous entrepreneur named Albert Baldwin used the building as a warehouse to store cotton. In later years, Mr. Baldwin developed the first pumping station in New Orleans. This played a key role in the growth of the city since New Orleans is below sea level.Since the early 1900's the building has changed ownership many times, but was primarily used for the storage of cotton until the early 1940's. In 1984, the site was leased to the World Exhibition Authority as the location for the Italian Village for the 1984 Louisiana World's Fair and Exposition. In the late 1980's, the site was converted to an upscale nightclub known as City Lights. The club had four bars, three dance floors and more than 10,000 square feet of space. The New Orleans night scene was dominated for more than 10 years by City Lights. After several years of success, it was time for a change, and that is when Generations Hall, home of the Metropolitan Nightclub was conceived. Currently, Generations Hall is a 36,000 plus square foot, multi-use facility featuring the Metropolitan rooms I & II and the Big Room. Also, the Metropolitan I room recently received a major renovation adding a new level, a full service ultra bar, restrooms, and 5 VIP rooms. The entire facility has three rooms, three dance floors, seven bars, twelve VIP rooms, and some of the most elaborate sound and lighting in the Gulf South. Generations Hall thrives on the tourism and convention industry, and is conveniently located one block away from the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. Also, every Saturday Night, Generations Hall opens its doors as the Metropolitan Night Club, and is host to over 1000 people enjoying music from techno to hip-hop to breakbeats spun by D3 Ronnie Roux, Sumo Dj, and DJ Wixx. Guests usually arrive after 11:00 p.m. and do not go home until 5:00 a.m.
